But for this post, I wouldn’t have known about the latest achievement of Shiv Sena. Why isn’t this front page?

sshhhhh….
such things are not for the front page. That is, globally, devoted to the Islamists, jihadists, burqas, talibans and terrorists (who are ‘all’ from one faith)….
ha ha
Raza,
it’s funny
but not funny…
I was in India, Goa and New Delhi specifically, the past fortnight and I read about and saw another manifestation of religious fervor that was bothersome. I saw the ‘Kaawdis’ on the streets of New Delhi; they held up traffic for hours! There was also a write up about how some vehicles were set on fire by an angry mob of Kaawdi supporters. There were roads that were inoperable because of the Kaawdis, and the traffic police looked on helplessly. It was a nightmare getting through the streets of New Delhi, the capital of a country that is apparently in the throes of an ecoomic boom!
Even though I can’t figure out what is Kaawdi, but such things are quite a familiar site everywhere in India. Yesterday I had to shut all the doors and windows to keep the noise of firecrackers out.
Some festival was on. Festivals are generally very noisy here, not bad, if you’re into it. If you’re not… God help you.
I’m surprised that almost every Indian I mentioned this to as not aware of this phenomenon of devotees carrying water from Haridwaar to far away places on foot before the holy day of “Shivaraatri’. I witnessed hundreds of such “kaavdis” (that’s what they are called in New Delhi) wearing orange robes walking tirelessly toward their destination. They were given priority at every road crossing and as a result there were major traffic hold ups in various parts of the city.
Now I understand! Shivratri. I have seen them.
But this is first time I heard the term kaawdi.
I may have spelt it incorrectly, hehe. Are they known by another name?
I can’t remember any special names.
