“Virtue” is close if “Sin” is understood to be what is morally wrong.
JazakAllah Aasem.
Well, there is an Arabic antonym- akhirat, and I was looking for an English word for that.
It’s also interesting to note that virtue exists only as a noun or as an adjective, almost implying the innate quality of virtue. Sin,whereas, exists as a noun, an adjective, and most importantly as a verb… implying perhaps that it is a ‘conscious act’. I am therefore a trifle hesitant to see those two as antonyms
Thank you IMeMy. Now that you are here, may I ask you this as well-
Do you think there is any explanation?
Others are welcome to comment on that too.
I mean an explanation of why the Queen’s language has nothing that is a proper antonym of sin?
An interesting observation Manas, and I am not sure I have a plausible explanation; however, this is my line of thought… according to Christianity, humanity is born into sin because of the ‘fall of man’; all of us participate in this ‘original sin’ since we are all born from the same forefather Adam. It may perhaps be the all-pervasive nature of sin that prevents the existence of an antonym for the word ’sin’ in english, a language closely associated with Christianity… also, I wonder if there is are antonyms for ’sin’ in Latin and Spanish (pecado/pecar), two languages closely associated with Christianity… In English ‘Salvation’ is perhaps the closest antonym I can think of…
How about in your language?
I agree with you. That is a very plausible explanation. I would like to know if there’s an antonym in Latin. There may be one in Spanish, as their language and culture is so deeply influenced by Islamic culture.
The word Salvation does have a verb form, Absolve, but that assumes preexisting sin.
Two words in Bengali actually. Muslims say Neki for good deeds (and Gunah for bad.) Hindus say (Pap for sin, and) Punya for good deeds.
thats a good one
