The former, because, ideals are always subject to question. In modern human society, with active freedom of speech, ideals are always attacked and one has to defend it without getting angry :).
Hmm… very interesting question. I think it depends on the circumstances. A slap in the face sure does smart, but the pain is temporary, and any bruising will fade very quickly. However, a slap to the ego (which can be tied strongly to one’s ideals) produces a great deal more pain, the sting lasts for longer, and well, we all know how long a bruised ego takes to heal. 🙂
If you can separate your ideals from your self, then it is ok. But if you feel that your ideals are a representation of your self, then i think the two forms of attack can be equally as painful and humiliating.
That is why it hurts so many when people attack Islam, as many Muslims feel that Islam is their life, a very extension of themselves. Debate is welcome, and very important to society, and to maintaining a good standard of intellect. But an attack (which in my mind is something very different to debate; a lot more sinister) on Islam, can be akin to an attack on a Muslim, if there is a strong emotional attachment present.

Oh no no, I am not talking of debates. I am talking of attacks. I probably was not clear enough.
If it were debate I would like to replace ‘worse’ with ‘better’. Because the word ‘worse’ prima facie assumes that both are bad.

That’s what bugs me too. How can one’s ideals be isolated from his self? People do what they believe in. “Action speaks louder than words”.
Manas spare a thought for the person’s family also. God forbid if I am attacked for my ideaology my dependents(emotionally and financially dependents) suffer too. Attacking a person is worse.
With age and maturity thoughts evolve and sometime you start agreeing with the person or at least start understanding the ideals of the person from the other side of the divide also.If as the result of attack the other person dies you don’t have a chance to make amends.
How can either be ‘better’, or ‘good’ for that matter; after all it is an ‘attack’?
I think what we are trying to gauge is perhaps which of the two, the id and the ideology, is more sensitive and so more prone to getting hurt. Would you agree?
Hmmmmm… I think that if we’re really firm in what we believe, then an attack on the ideology won’t really matter to us ‘cuz we ‘know’ it to be the truth – for example, despite what sooo many people say about Islam, WE know that it’ll be around forever, and that Allah Himself is its Defender. So in this case, I’d be angrier if a Muslim was attacked rather than Islam – because I know that Islam, as a perfect way of life based on the Qur’an and Sunnah, is something which no one can ever take away from us; yet a fellow Muslim (or even just myself) is far more vulnerable to harm…

I see your point. Yet, Tolstoy said-
“a child can grow without a father or a mother, if God is with it” or something like that.
Some people risked their life for their ideology. We are alive because some of them succeeded.
But then, it is really difficult to follow their examples. Easier said than done.
Also, ideologies don’t always die with the person. Galileo was murdered, but the spirit of Renaissance lived on.

Yes, in case of ‘attack’ better or good is not the word.
You may put it in that perspective.
Little sister Mouse
Attack on ideology may not always mean verbal attack. For example to stop you from praying or wearing the hijab will constitute an attack on ideology. Whereas swearing at you or hitting you will be attack on the person.
Ohhhhh, good point… in which case, I really don’t know – it’s something to take more time to think upon!
all i can say is if u push someone to the limits… then he will react…. and the more cornered he/she feels the more violent the reaction would be
